The Web Ontology Language OWL, as introduced in Chapter 4, is the language recommended by the World Wide Web consortium (W3C) for expressing ontologies for the Semantic Web. OWL is based on Description Logics, see Chapter 1, and as such is based on first-order predicate logic as underlying knowledge representation and reasoning paradigm.
