Why Join Kno.e.sis?

We think it's the most “happening” research organization in the United States if you are interested in semantic Web, semantic Web services, applications of semantic and workflow technologies to e-science (life science, health care), DoD and content management applications, and collaborative research encompassing information integration, database management, Web-based information systems (including search and analysis techniques), data mining, statistical and NLP-based information processing, information extraction, grid computing, and more.

Our educational philosophy is “learning how to learn.” We prepare students for long-term success that goes beyond good technical skills. Training encompasses communication and presentation, leadership, and teamwork. Most of our work is done in small teams. Our research is interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with partners to address real-world problems and real-world data.

Our students are very successful. Advisees of faculty in the center have been employed in research universities (e.g., NCSU, Raleigh) and major companies (e.g., Accenture Labs, Yahoo, Microsoft, and SAP. We have an excellent alumni network. Practically all students do internships at top institutions including IBM Research (Almaden, TJ Watson, Bangalore), HP Research, National Library of Medicine, Oracle, and Amazon. The Center's faculty have varied and complementary backgrounds covering information integration, knowledge representation and reasoning, data mining, statistical machine learning, bioinformatics, and programming languages. Faculty have prior experience in starting new successful companies as well as R & D in large established companies.

We have exceptional resources. The third floor of the new Joshi Research Center is dedicated primarily to the activities of the Kno.e.sis Center and the LexisNexis Ohio Eminent Scholar. Our computing resources include the Center’s server rack with multiple Linux and Windows servers, a cluster system, access to Ohio Super Computing Grid, and access to extensive daytaOhio resources, such as a Teradata platform with two terabytes of storage and the world-class Appenzeller Visualization lab. Each student has a workstation with dual processors, 4GB main memory, 250GB disk, etc. The Center has Web- and videoconferencing and access to multiple conference rooms.

The Ohio Eminent Scholar position and daytaOhio were established by an $11 million state award to fund a Wright Center of Innovation for Advanced Data Management&Analysis. Our research is well funded with federal (NSF, NIH, AFRL, etc.) and state moneys. All PhD students are funded.

We are still growing: the CSE department seeks to recruit young faculty for two open positions that will expand and strengthen the Center's expertise and scholarship.

Prospective Graduate Students

Many funding opportunities exist for your graduate education. A variety of Fellowships have been designed for new applicants pursuing the doctoral degree. Graduate Research Assistantships are generally available when graduate students are ready to undertake independent, focused research. Additional valuable information is available in the FAQ.

Prospective Undergraduate Students

The Kno.e.sis Center currently has funding for two undergrads who would like to engage in and support our research related to Web technologies. For more information contact Jill Sellers, Kno.e.sis Administrative Coordinator.
Undergraduates are encouraged to meet faculty members and investigate additional opportunities.

Faculty Positions

The Computer Science & Engineering Department is seeking to fill two open positions that will focus on Knoesis research topics.
Contact: Amit Sheth, Director, Knoesis Center, or the Department Chair.

International Summer Interns

Kno.e.sis Center hosts a couple of summer interns each year to engage with our researchers and undertake independent projects. In general, the program seeks students who meet all or most of the following criteria:

  • have completed the third year in a four-year bachelor's degree program
  • are in the top 25% of their class
  • are from one of the top 10% of universities in their country (universities whose admissions are based on national exams or competition)
  • want to pursue graduate studies in the US and will apply for admission to a PhD program starting one academic year after the summer internship
  • are interested in one of the areas in which Kno.e.sis excels
  • can demonstrate strong programming expertise in Java or C++
  • have been exposed to basic Web technologies
  • have participated in technical or scientific extracurricular activities such as research projects and competitions
  • have shown an excellent work ethic

We invite interested students to study our Web site thoroughly and then to write a letter expressing their interest, with a link to their Web site, to Prof. Sheth and email to Jill Sellers.

Some of the past summer internship details are available at the past vistors page

US Summer Interns

We certainly welcome US undergrads in their third year with an interest in pursuing graduate studies with a focus in our areas of expertise. Contact Prof. Sheth via Jill Sellers. For more information contact Jill Sellers, Kno.e.sis Administrative Coordinator.
